According to studies, the leading cause for hair loss in both men and women is known as male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. This form of baldness is usually identified by hair loss in the front of the scalp that moves steadily to the back and top of the head.
Male pattern baldness usually starts with a receding hairline and thinning hair. Female pattern baldness usually starts by a general thinning of the hair. The thinning becomes more noticeable in the back of the head rather than along the hairline.
It’s not always the hereditary reason for hair loss. There is a condition called as trichotillomania or compulsive hair pulling that may even cause hair loss. A part of the scalp being pulled will be an invitation to this condition. Trichotillomania will show its effect on this area and cause serious alarm for hair loss. A cure for this would be to stop pulling the hair in the area and let the hair grow normally.
One of the more serious conditions for hair loss would be the scarring alopecia. This condition is at risk when certain hair style shows its affect on the hair. One such hair style would be tight braids, this will cause tension on the scalp and this will lead the hair to fall out. Pulling and putting constant pressure on the scalp and the hair follicles will cause inflammation and result in scarring.
Drugs and certain kind of medication can cause hair loss. Certain individuals will experience small percentage of hair loss due to the prescribed medicine, such as the blood thinners and medicines related to heart conditions are some medical treatments that may result in hair loss.
One other medically linked treatment that cause hair loss is chemotherapy. Most of the medicine or drugs used in chemotherapy will make the hair cells stop its division. Thus the hair starts becoming thinner and breaks pushing the hair follicles. The patient of chemotherapy is bound to loss all the hair. But chemotherapy can’t be called as the long term hair loss, as after the treatment is complete the patient will have the hair re grown.
Apart from these, there are many types of infection that may cause hair loss. One of the common fungal infections that cause hair loss infection in children is ringworm. This infection can be identified by the formation of small circular patches that appear on the scalp, and these are contagious. The area where it is infected will have the skin replaced by pink scaly looking skin. Applying the anti fungal cream to the area of infection is the cure and treatment. It will take minimum 2 to 3 weeks for this condition to get treated.
